Controlling Weeds From Planting to Canopy
Between soybean planting and canopy closure, controlling yield-limiting weeds and managing potential resistance can be challenging. A holistic weed management program, including a premium preemergence herbicide followed by a postemergence herbicide, can be the difference-maker.
Begin before emergence
Start the season strong by choosing a preemergence herbicide tailored to conditions like weed mix, weed pressure and soil pH, such as Fierce® EZ, Fierce® XLT or Fierce® MTZ.
“The easiest weed to control is that weed that doesn't emerge,” says Devonne Marshall, regional account manager at Valent U.S.A. “Loading up on the front end with a premium preemergence herbicide that has multiple effective modes of action for the weed species that you're targeting, is key.”
For growers experiencing heavy pressure of tough-to-control weeds like Palmer amaranth and waterhemp, an additional mode of action, like that found in Fierce MTZ, can provide the control needed.
“As you start to get heavy weed pressure, especially with some of your tough-to-control weeds, Fierce MTZ really shines,” says Joe Short, asset strategy team manager for Valent. “It’s worth the investment because you're adding that third effective mode of action and increasing your overall probability for control.”
With an application of a preemergence herbicide offering six to eight weeks of residual control, growers can give their soybeans the best start possible. In those geographies more prone to strong, late-emerging Palmer amaranth and waterhemp pressure window, continuing that control is critical.
Control until canopy
After a preemergence application, growers need residual control to help shut out weeds until soybeans reach canopy. Perpetuo® Herbicide is a flexible option for whatever trait system a grower chooses, and it offers long-lasting residual activity. Bridging the gap between preemergence and postemergence treatments is critical to finishing the season strong.
“With the Fierce brand upfront, the purpose in putting Perpetuo behind that is to extend the Group 15 chemistry and give rotational flexibility,” Marshall continues. “It fits multiple trait platforms, and it really provides a lot of flexibility and extended residual against those tough-to-manage weeds.”
