Enhance Sugar Beet Quality with Effective Disease Control
Harvesting healthier sugar beets means healthier beets go into storage, leading to less loss at processing time. And ensuring sugar beet quality begins long before harvest.
A critical component of a healthy sugar beet crop is an effective disease control program.
Excalia® Fungicide helps keep plants healthy and improves yield potential, helping maintain sugar content. Excalia targets Rhizoctonia, is an IPM friendly tool and improves crop efficiency.
“We don't just want to improve yield. We want to maintain percent recoverable sugar as well. Excalia Fungicide helps do both,” says Eric Ott, field market development specialist with Valent U.S.A. “When you have more yield and the same amount of sugar content that results in more recoverable sugar. It goes back to improved crop efficiency.”
Excalia is a highly effective SDHI fungicide that offers locally systemic and translaminar activity, moving quickly into the plant to protect it against destructive pathogens such as Rhizoctonia.
“Since Excalia was registered, we've had field trials in both noninoculated and Rhizoctonia-inoculated trials, and a well-timed Excalia application has provided excellent protection against Rhizoctonia Root and Crown Rot in both university and sugar company trials,” Ott says.
Excalia should be applied between the second- and eight-leaf stage on sugar beets, with timing dependent on environmental conditions.
“As we know from the disease triangle, environmental conditions are important for disease development, and Rhizoctonia is no different. If soils are cool and dry earlier in that application window, delaying that application closer to that six- to eight-leaf stage is a better option. We want to protect against Rhizoctonia root and crown rot,” Ott says. “We are allowing that plant to better achieve its potential production.”
What’s more, Excalia is a sustainable choice.
In addition to superior disease control efficacy, Excalia offers growers flexible timing and tank mix compatibility. Low use rates mean fewer trips across the field, helping sugar beet growers farm more sustainably.
“If you can reduce the number of trips across the field and tank mix other herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and even fertilizers with Excalia, that reduces the amount of trips that are needed,” Ott says.
