Aveo EZ® Nematicide: Proactively Control Nematodes to Preserve Yield
Soybean cyst nematode populations are lurking in the soil, feeding on vulnerable soybean roots and limiting yield potential. It’s time to reclaim the yield potential lost to these hidden pests.
Soybean cyst nematode has been around in the U.S. since the 1950s, remaining the number one pest in soybean production even today. In the early 90s, growers began planting varieties with resistance to this widespread pest, but today genetic resistance may not be enough.
“Once you have SCN, you always have SCN. They don't go away. It's really impossible to eliminate the population,” says Nathan Schroeder, nematologist with the University of Illinois. “The eggs are tough. They are survivors and can hang around in the field for multiple years, even without feeding. They’ll be just fine waiting for the next soybean crop to come along.”
And while corn is not a host crop, SCN are able to survive during crop rotations.
Despite planting SCN-resistant varieties and rotating crops, soybean growers may still be losing as much as 25% of yield potential to this microscopic pest.
Dair McDuffee, product development manager for Valent seed treatments acknowledges that there are no silver bullets when it comes to soybean cyst nematode control, but using a nematicide like Aveo® EZ Nematicide seed treatment can ensure plants remain healthier, preserving yield potential.
“Valent ‘s biological nematicide, Aveo EZ Nematicide, has a strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens that is specific to our product. It colonizes the root quickly, so it's able to grow with the plant. And we've seen in testing that it can produce secondary metabolites that cause paralysis in some nematodes,” McDuffee says.
Seed treatments, such as Aveo, won’t eliminate plant-parasitic nematodes from the soil. However, they will help control feeding damage, allow soybean plants to thrive, and reduce year-over-year reproduction.
Aveo offers ease of use and a low use rate. “It's got a use rate of 0.1 fluid ounces per unit, which sounds like very little, but that delivers 2 million CFUs (colony-forming units) per seed,” McDuffee says.
Soybean cyst nematode is a nebulous threat that requires more thought than may be needed to determine how to effectively control weeds and diseases that are readily and visually identifiable.
